This leaning desk and shelving unit turns any wall into an office. Solid walnut construction, two slim drawers. 90″ tall x 44″ wide x 26″ deep. A matching flat-file/work table/rolling cart is in the works to complete the workspace of the graphic designer that inspired this design.

Inspired by the mid-century classics, this walnut shelving system can be set up in many configurations. Just pull the pegs, move the supports up or down and choose what components you want at what heights. The package pictured here was designed as a media console, but the possibilites are endless. Cabinets, desks, drawers, wardrobe hooks… If you can think of it, I can work it in!

Heavy duty shelving made of salvaged water tank cedar and blackened steel. This design can be fabricated in just about any size and with your choice of wood. The steel corner design would allow this piece to be even taller, wider and deeper than you see here without so much as a wobble. Thanks to Evan the Intern (seen polishing above) for all his help over the past few weeks.

Add storage and display space, check. Accentuate the height of the room, check. Maintain a free-hanging look, check. Integrate the television and media components, check. Hide cords, check. Come in on budget, check…
The Atlantic Shelving and Media System accomplishes all these goals through simplicity. The materials are modest: blackened steel brackets and reclaimed douglas fir planking, and the forms are basic. Careful attention to proportions and spacing allow an amazing amount of functionality to complete the room rather than clutter it. The media cabinet is fit with a heavy duty, full extension shelf that allows easy access to the components’ cables while keeping the tangle out of sight.

It was not intentional, but it is fitting that the last thing I design before leaving San Francisco has the silouhette of the Transamerica Pyramid. The Tower Shelf is solid maple, the legs salvaged from a large palette and the shelves rescued from the junk pile at a local sawmill. Goodbye SF!

Trestle Table

A small apartment’s need of a sleek dining table is perfectly served by the glass topped Trestle table. The glass was a lucky score from a local salvage yard and the base is constructed of salvaged old-growth douglas fir floor planks.
The piece is displayed here with a refurbished, vintage Shaw Walker desk chair, and the heavy duty, extendable shelf system I put together using a cast off painters’ plank.

After designing completely concealed hardware for these heavy duty floating shelves, we decided we wouldn’t mind seeing some of the steel. I pushed the supports out to the edges to showcase the steel along side the endgrain of the fir planks.

these designs were hacked out of fir beams that I salvaged from a basement remodel when I was still working as a carpenter. the designs were informed by the few tools I had at hand–pretty much a skill saw, router, and palm sander–and came to fruition in the backyard of my first apartment in sf.
